Questions our guests ask us most

1
Can we just walk in, or do we need to book first?
We're a small farm, so every visit needs to be booked in advance. This lets us make sure that everything is ready for you when you arrive, and that we're never overcrowded.
2
Is there public transportation to your farm?
Unfortunately, there is no bus connection to Unarin-Luusua and our farm. The closest bus stops are in Meltaus and Tianinen. Upon request, we can plan your visit according to the bus schedule, pick you up from there, and bring you back to the bus. We can also pick you up from Rovaniemi. Send us an email or use our contact form for more information.
3
Do you offer reindeer farm visits during the summer and autumn months?
No — we're closed during summer, as our reindeer aren't "at home." They roam freely across the forests and swamps, where they find plenty of food and raise their calves undisturbed by humans. Once the first snow falls, they make their own way back to the farm and seek out human company again.
4
Can we book a private or customised visit?
Yes — we're happy to arrange private farm visits and tailor excursions to your group's interests and timing. We can also offer lunch upon prebooking. Send us an email or use the contact form to get started, and we'll help you plan the details.
5
What should we wear?
Make sure to dress warmly with appropriate winter clothing, including:
-
A base layer, mid-layer, and windproof outer layer.
-
A warm hat, thick gloves or mittens, and thinner gloves for photography.
Most importantly, you need proper winter boots. Once your feet are cold, you'll freeze. Especially tightly fitting shoes are not suitable for temperatures below freezing and low levels of physical activity. We recommend insulated, thick-soled boots with enough room for two pairs of hand-knitted wool socks (and footwarmers if temperatures are below -20 °C).
The Finnish Meteorological Institute offers the best weather forecast for Lapland.

For autumn hiking, we recommend high-quality rubber boots because we'll walk through swampy areas and off-road.
6
Do your experiences have a temperature limit?
We monitor the weather closely, and if temperatures drop below −25°C, we'll get in touch with you beforehand to plan the reindeer farm visit together. On these days, we also provide extra blankets and hot water bottles to keep you comfortable outdoors.
If temperatures drop below −20°C, we reserve the right to cancel the snowshoeing trips for safety reasons. In such cases, we will contact you to discuss rescheduling or cancellation. You will be fully refunded.
7
How early should we arrive before the experience starts?
Please arrive 5 minutes before the program begins so that we can start on time. If you are more than 10 minutes late, please let us know so that we can wait for you. The best way is to call us or send a message to the number provided in your booking email.
8
How about animal welfare?
The wellbeing and health of our reindeer is very important to us. Our reindeer farm visit facilitates an ethical human-animal encounter because our reindeer are never forced to interact; they choose to approach and engage with you on their own terms.
Reindeer are naturally curious animals, but also very sensitive to stress. They thrive on routine and predictable behaviour, so we always ensure encounters are calm and respectful, with the animals free to retreat whenever they want to.
9
Is there accommodation close to your farm?
In Unarin-Luusua, there are a few cosy cottages suitable for couples, families and friend groups. Our village is suitable for both spending a few days to relax in the middle of nowhere and using the place as a base camp for longer Lapland vacations. If you want, we can customise experiences for you, such as a reindeer pick-up from your cottage, a night safari or a gingerbread-making evening during Christmas time. We warmly recommend Villa Unari, Kettumökki or Ohola Cabin. In the neighbouring villages, there are Ranch Kuulas in Tiainen and the Holiday Village Kierinki.
10
Can I cancel or change my booking?
You can cancel your bookings up to 20 days in advance free of charge and receive a 100% refund. After that, we charge the full price. You can alter your bookings free of charge if you inform us in due course via email.
